When community members find their self-interest tied to Walmart because of the lower cost of producing goods through a globally-efficient method of production in areas of low-cost labor (with many other well-honed efficiencies), is it possible that investing in local firms is not likely to have the effect intended?

What about investing in firms located locally or otherswise that value all of humanity, incorporate stewardship of humanity and the environment? Perhaps this type of "anyone who is working to the benefit of humanity at large" thinking is more auspicious, and will actually be a more direct path to benefiting any physical community.
