Profit maximization, were it to happen in a social vacuum, would be souless, and lifeless -- having no limits to curb excesses that throw natural cycles into tailspin in a manner that can only end the process of profit maximization. Of course, profit maximization does not exist in a social vacuum, so the perennial fight in the age of Adolescent Capitalism (in the age when profit maximizing is the common objective) is between those protections afforded by society against the regressive outcomes of profit maximization.

Profit maximization has its positive attributes - especially the unifying power of competition and the objective of opportunity. But it has negatives as well...
